Annah Sango was both powerful and motivating when she closed her welcoming speech with a challenge to everyone in the conference to think about how accountable have we been in creating a safe space for her and everyone else who are living with and affected by HIV. – July 22, 2012, Opening Plenary (“I’m a young woman transitioning into adulthood, transitioning into full womanhood. And I would like to do that in a safe space. A safe space that allows me to access and exercise all my rights. A safe space that will allow me to be the best that I can be in life. A safe space that each and every one of you in this room can help create. The last question I will leave with you is how have you been accountable so far in creating that space for me and every one else?” Sango is a peer educator and role model to other young women in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. She is a member of the International Community of Women Living with HIV and AIDS (Southern Africa) and founded her own community-based support group for women affected by HIV.)
